Fluid Dynamics Laboratory

The Fluid Dynamics Lab (FDL) is devoted to the study of fluid dynamics and heat transfer from the micro-scale to the macro-scale.  For smaller micro-systems, unique physical phenomena can result in efficiency and manufacturing challenges unseen for traditional scales.  For larger macro-systems, turbulent and compressible flow physics can produce complex, fascinating phenomena.  In our lab, we examine engineering technology based on natural systems, such as jets inspired by jellyfish and heat sinks modeled on the circulatory system.  Besides these miniature applications, we consider fluid motion on a much larger scale, including geophysical systems such as volcanic eruptions and surfzone eddies.
