Josh Emerson Fellow 2010 - 2011
Josh spent his fellowship year at La Center Middle School working
with Kristy Schneider and her 6th grade science studetns. He is currently finisihing his M.S. in Environmental Science at WSUV. His thesis research focuses on the zooplankton community composition
of reservoirs in teh Columbia and Snake Rivers, specifically the upstream spread of the invasive copepod Pseudodiaptomus forbesi.

She completed her MS degree in Environmental Science in December 2009. Laura is currently working at the Washington State Department of Ecology in Olympia. She is in the marine monitoring unit training as a flight technician on the marine flight program which uses a sea plane to sample different stations around the Puget Sound and in Grays Harbor and Willapa. They are sampling water quality parameters in order to monitor environmental conditions over the long term.
Kara Goodwin Fellow 2009 - 2010
Kara spent her fellowship year at Gaiser Middle School working with Meagan Graves and 6th grade science students. She completed her MS degree in Environmental Science in May 2010. She is now working at the Environmental Protection Agency in Corvallis, Oregon.
Andy Harwood Fellow 2009 - 2010

Andy spent his fellowship year at Liberty Middle School working with Sarah Kankelberg and 7th grade science students. He completed his MS degree in Environmental Science Summer 2010. Andy is working with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife researching the effectiveness of alternative commercial fishing gear in the Columbia. They are testing purse-seines, beach seines, and fish traps to see if they have lower mortality rates than the current method of commercial fishing, gillnets. The results so far have been extremely encouraging. Gillnets work by using an 8 1/2 inch mesh size, give or take, and as fish swim upstream into the nets, their head passes thr style="clear:both"ough the holes and their delicate gills get trapped in the net. The alternative gear uses a mesh size of 3 1/2 inches and just acts like a wall to the fish, allowing fish to be collected with very low impacts, and wild salmon and non-target fish can be released unharmed.
Erica Henry Fellow 2009 - 2010

Erica spent her fellowship year at La Center Middle School working with Jeremy Ecklund and 7th & 8th grade Science students. She completed her M.S. degree in Environmental Science in December 2010. Sean spent two fellowship years at La Center Middle School working with Laurie Cripe and 6th, 7th, and 8th grade integrated science students. He continues to pursue his PhD in Environmental Science at WSUV. His research is focused on groundfish and deep-sea coral and sponge habitats off the coast of Washington and Oregon. He also works on developing models to predict the distribution and abundance patterns of these species. He recently participated in a research cruise off the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, where he used a remotely operated vehicle to collect data on coral and sponge habitats that will be used by the Pacific Fishery Management Council to determine how to best protect these long lived and biologically important resources.
